Celebrate World Oceans Day

Covering 70.8% of the Earth's surface and containing 97% of its water, the majestic oceans produce most of the oxygen we breathe. The health and survival of our oceans and their diverse marine life are in our hands. Here are some ways you can make a deep blue difference.

At Home
Use less water, dispose of cleaning products and toxic chemicals properly, and participate in your local recycling program.

Around Town
Buy less plastic, choose sustainable seafood, bring reusable shopping bags, carpool, bike, or invest in a fuel-efficient vehicle.

On the Water
Follow "catch and release" fishing, respect habitats and observe safe boating rules by avoiding coral reefs and natural grasses.

Along with these simple preservation practices, another gift you can give our beautiful oceans is your time. Participating in beach cleanups and volunteering with your local watershed conservation group are ways you can ensure the "lungs of the earth" will be breathing life into our world for generations to come.

Summer Self-Care

Summer is known for fun in the sun and vacations with family or friends. But don't forget to take care of yourself. Follow these tips for summer self-care.

Wear Sunscreen
The sun's harsh rays increase the risk of skin cancer. Make sure to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Drink More Water
Warm weather and sunshine increase the risk of dehydration. Experts recommend that women drink 2.7 liters of water per day, while men drink 3.7 liters.

Relax and Unwind
Read a good book while relaxing on the sand underneath a beach umbrella or unwinding on a deck overlooking the mountains.

Eat Healthy
Summertime is the prime time to enjoy ripe fruits, such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, and nectarines. Start your summer mornings off with a tasty, nutritious smoothie.

Play Outside
Take advantage of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities like running, walking, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and biking. Participating in these activities in the fresh air can improve mood and cardiovascular health.

Hot vs. Cold Showers

Hot shower? Cold shower? It's an age-old debate, so let's give both sides of the faucet a turn.

Cold showers help wake you up in the morning and can create an anti-depressive effect. Chilly showers can also help lock moisture in hair and skin. However, cold showers might put a strain on your body. If you have heart problems, ask your doctor whether you should avoid cold showers.

Hot showers, on the other hand, help your body release toxins and open your pores. Additionally, the warmth from a hot shower relaxes muscles and lessens tensions. But hot water can also dry out your hair and worsen skin conditions such as eczema.

Modern Grandparenting

A recent survey conducted by Good Housekeeping found that grandparents today consider themselves more involved and better connected with their grandchildren than previous generations. Modern grandparenting is enriching lives of all ages, with exceptional improvements in five key areas.

Connection
Modern grandparents have embraced technology to connect with grandkids when they can't be together in person. In fact, 81% of grandparents today say that tech such as video-chatting has strengthened their relationships with their grandkids.

Acceptance
Today's grandparents believe they're open and adaptable to societal changes. Of those surveyed, 68% consider themselves "cooler" than previous grandparent generations.

Activity
Baby-boomer grandparents consider themselves more energetic than their own grandparents were. But even though they may feel younger than their grandparents, they're likely to be chronologically older.

Involvement
Grandparents today are more involved in their grandchildren's daily lives than previous generations. Approximately 7.8 million children live in multi-generational homes, and more than 2.5 million grandparents are their grandkids' primary caregivers. Even grandparents who don't live with their grandkids are taking on more childcare responsibilities as it becomes more common for both parents to work full time.

Support
Children and grandchildren receive more financial support from their grandparents than previous generations. An AARP survey found 94% of grandparents provide some financial assistance to their grandchildren. About 25% of those have cosigned private student loans, and 7% have taken on debt to help their grandchildren pay for college.
